To reduce the social and economic damage caused by strong earthquakes through the implementation of preventive construction measures for the timely strengthening of buildings and structures with a lack of seismic resistance, it is necessary to forecast their consequences. The article proposes rules for the prediction of the consequences of strong earthquakes, based on the initial data in the form of a class of seismic resistance and various types of seismic hazard.

Structures from metamaterials — a modern alternative to seismic isolating devices for protection from earthquakes and anthropogenic vibrations

Seismic pads for protection buildings and structures from seismic bulk P and S waves are analyzed. The historical cases are considered including the well-known Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. The major benefits of the desired seismic pads comparing to a more traditional seismic isolating devices are presented, namely, better protecting ability, more durability comparable to the construction life of the protecting buildings, and protection of the foundation structures remaining unprotected at the use of other seismic isolating devices.

A generalization of the formulas of L. V. Kantorovich for estimating the seismic risk for individual structures to calculate the risk for the built-up area is proposed. Cases of newly built up territory are considered, which are characterized by one class of structure seismic resistance and a built-up area that has structures with a different seismic resistance class.
